How to Edit and Import an Existing PDF Resume

Learn how to import a text-based PDF resume, review extracted fields and edit the content in a new template.

Short answer

Import a text-based PDF into Careerium to bring recognized contact information, summary text and skills into a new draft. Import does not copy the original layout or guarantee perfect field recognition, so review each result before applying it.

Check whether your PDF can be imported

Open the PDF and try selecting a sentence with your cursor. If you can select and copy the text, the document probably has a text layer. If each page behaves like a single photograph, it may be a scan that requires OCR.

Careerium resume import has a clear scope:

  • It accepts a PDF or pasted plain text.
  • A PDF can be up to 10 MB and 10 pages.
  • It does not run OCR on scans or photos without a text layer.
  • It does not retain the old document’s fonts, columns or visual design.

Import a PDF resume step by step

  • 1Sign in and open the resume editor.
  • 2Open Resume Import from the editor toolbar.
  • 3Choose your PDF or paste your resume text.
  • 4Review the extracted email, phone, links, summary and skills.
  • 5Select only fields you know are accurate.
  • 6Confirm that the current editor draft will change and apply the import.
  • 7Manually review experience, education, dates and reading order.

Why human review is necessary

A PDF stores a visual page layout. In a two-column resume, text from the left and right columns can emerge in an unexpected order. Creative section names can also make field recognition harder.

An email address and phone number follow relatively clear patterns. Determining which description belongs to which position depends on headings, dates and placement. The tool therefore avoids treating uncertain sections as verified facts.

Before-and-after checklist

  • Save any current draft you want to keep to your account first.
  • Verify name, email, phone and links character by character.
  • Review every start and end date.
  • Confirm that bullet points sit under the correct role.
  • Download the new PDF and check selectable text and page overflow.

Should I review imported information?

Yes. Columns, unusual headings and reading order can affect extraction. Apply only fields you have verified.
