What Makes a Strong Resume?
A strong resume is not a complete history of everything you have ever done. It is a focused document that helps an employer understand three things quickly: what you can do, where you have created value, and why your experience fits the role.
Recruiters often review many applications in a short period of time, and applicant tracking systems may scan the document before a person sees it. Your resume therefore needs clear structure, relevant keywords, and evidence—not vague claims.

1. Start With the Right Resume Format
For most candidates, reverse chronological order is the safest option. List your most recent role first, followed by earlier experience. This format is familiar to recruiters and easy for ATS software to interpret.
Use a clean layout with consistent headings, readable font sizes, and enough white space. Avoid placing essential information inside graphics, text boxes, or decorative charts that may not be parsed correctly.
2. Add Clear Contact Information
Your header should include:
- Full name
- Professional title
- Email address
- Phone number
- City and country when relevant
- LinkedIn profile
- Portfolio or GitHub link for applicable roles
You usually do not need to include a full street address, marital status, date of birth, or other personal details that are unrelated to the application.
3. Write a Focused Professional Summary
Your summary should be two to four concise sentences tailored to the target position. Mention your experience level, area of expertise, strongest relevant skills, and one meaningful result.
Example: “Product-focused frontend developer with four years of experience building accessible React applications. Improved page performance by 38% and helped deliver a design system used across six products.”
Avoid generic statements such as “hard-working team player seeking a challenging opportunity.” These phrases take up space without proving value.
4. Turn Work Experience Into Achievements
Each role should include the company, title, dates, and concise bullet points. Start bullets with strong action verbs and explain the result of your work.
❌ Weak: Responsible for email campaigns.
✅ Stronger: Built and tested segmented email campaigns that increased qualified demo requests by 24% in one quarter.
Useful measurements include revenue, cost savings, conversion, speed, quality, volume, customer satisfaction, delivery time, and team size. When exact figures are confidential, use ranges or describe the scale of the work.
5. Include Education and Relevant Skills
List your degree, institution, and graduation year or expected graduation date. Recent graduates can also include relevant coursework, academic projects, honors, or a strong GPA.
Create a skills section that reflects the target job. Prioritize tools, methods, platforms, languages, and certifications that appear in the job description and that you can genuinely use.
6. Tailor the Resume to Every Role
One generic resume is rarely the strongest resume for every application. Read the job description and identify the repeated responsibilities, required skills, and industry terminology.
- Move the most relevant experience higher within each section.
- Use matching terminology where it accurately describes your background.
- Remove details that do not support the target position.
- Update the summary for the role.
Never copy keywords into the document without context. Keyword stuffing creates an unnatural resume and does not help when a recruiter reads it.
7. Proofread Before You Download
Check spelling, punctuation, tense, date formats, and spacing. Confirm that links work and that the PDF still looks correct after export. Ask another person to review it if possible; familiar text is easy to overlook.
Final Resume Checklist
- The target role is clear within the first few lines.
- Experience focuses on outcomes rather than duties.
- Important keywords appear naturally.
- Dates and formatting are consistent.
- The resume is one or two focused pages.
- The PDF contains selectable text and opens correctly.
